Survey on Outdoor Activities (2024) Outdoor Sports Edition

We conducted the "Survey on Outdoor Activities (2024)" targeting 5,000 men and women aged 20-69 living in 47 prefectures in Japan. This year's survey asked about the implementation rate, purpose and reasons for implementing outdoor sports, what was good about implementing outdoor sports, future intentions, and reasons for implementing outdoor sports, by type of outdoor sport, and analyzed the results.

  • The 3-year implementation rate of outdoor sports is 21%.
    The purpose of the activities was to "spend time in nature," "change one's mood," and "health.

Survey Result Topics

Percentage of outdoor sports played

53% of respondents have experience in outdoor sports, 21% within the last 3 years, and 17% within the last year. The top 5 sports within the last 3 years are "Cycling," "Fishing," "Mountaineering/Trail-running," "Trekking/Hiking," and "Swimming (ocean, river, etc.). The percentage of respondents who have taken up outdoor sports is higher among males. The top three most popular sports by age group in the last three years were "fishing" and "cycling" among those in their 20s, "cycling" among those in their 30s to 50s, and "trekking/hiking" among those in their 60s. <Figure 1> 

Compared to 2022, the percentage of respondents who took up outdoor sports within 3 years remained the same or declined slightly for all types of outdoor sports. <Figure 2> 

"Cycling" and "Swimming (ocean, river, etc.)" increased slightly within the last year. Cycling" was particularly popular among men in their 40s and 50s. <Figure 3>

Reason for implementation and what was good about it

Reasons for doing outdoor sports and what was good about doing outdoor sports were asked for each type of outdoor sport that was done within the past three years. Reasons for outdoor sports were generally high for "spending time in nature," "change of pace," and "health. Spending time in nature" tended to be particularly popular among trekking/hiking, mountain climbing/trail running, and "health" among cyclists. <Figure 4 

The most common reason for being happy with the activity was "change of scenery" for all types of activities, followed by "improved physical fitness" for all types except fishing. <Figure 5

Intention to implement and motivation for implementation

The most popular activities among men were "fishing," "cycling," and "mountain/trail running" at 10-12%, while "trekking/hiking," "mountain/trail running," and "cycling" were popular among women at 7-8%. Figure 6

The most common reason for doing so was "When I have more time," followed by "When I find someone to do it with," and "When my income rises. Women were more likely to say they wanted someone to do it with them. <Figure 7
