Survey on museums and art galleries (2024)

We conducted the "Survey on Art Museums and Museums (2024)" among men and women aged 20-69 nationwide. This year's survey asked about "frequency of visiting art museums," "exhibits/contents of interest," "thoughts on art museums," "favorite art museums and the reasons for them," and "favorite artists/works.

  • Half of the prospective respondents "would like to visit" art galleries and museums. 
    Younger respondents are interested in "taste of special exhibitions" and those in their 40s are interested in "famous artists.

Survey Result Topics

The number of respondents who go to museums voluntarily is in the mid-10% range. About half of the respondents visit or would like to visit museums, including those who say they "only visit if invited" and "don't visit often, but would like to visit in the future".

The percentage of respondents in their 50s who "don't visit museums often but would like to visit in the future" was slightly higher among those in their 50s for museums and among those in their 50s and 60s for art galleries. <Figure 1>

The most popular exhibition/content of interest was "Special exhibitions with an interesting flavor" at 41.0%, followed by "Special exhibitions of rare and valuable works of art rarely shown to the public" at 38.3%.

There were differences by age group, with those in their 20s and 30s showing interest in "special exhibitions with interesting themes," those in their 40s showing interest in artist-related items such as "solo exhibitions of famous foreign artists" and "works by famous Japanese artists," and those in their 50s showing interest in "special exhibitions of valuable artworks that are rarely exhibited to the public. <Figure 2>

The top three responses for their thoughts on art galleries and museums were "Take time to look carefully at works I like," "View artworks freely on my own," and "Sometimes I think the admission fee is too expensive".

Respondents in their 50s were positive, with high percentages for "When traveling, I try to visit local museums" and "I check out flyers for other museums in the museum". <Figure 3>

Favorite museums include "Tokyo National Museum" and "Louvre Museum" because of the attractiveness of exhibits such as national treasures and the number of exhibits.
