Survey on Sleep (2024) Facts and Figures

The "Sleep Survey (2024)" was conducted on 2,500 men and women aged 20-69 residing in 47 prefectures in Japan. 2021 survey by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) showed that the average duration of Japanese people's sleep was the lowest among 33 countries. With all the focus on "good quality sleep," has there been any change in the actual state of sleep? In this report, we analyzed the current and ideal sleeping hours, the detailed state of sleep, worries about sleep, whether worries prevent sleep, and other worries that interfere with sleep.

Survey Result Topics
The volume zone for current sleep duration, including weekdays and holidays, is "about 6 hours," with an average of 6.4 hours. On the other hand, the ideal sleep duration was "around 7 hours" and "around 8 hours" in the volume zone, with an average of 7.4 hours. The gap between the current and ideal sleep duration was 1 hour, showing no significant change from last year. <Figures 1 and 2>

As for the details of their sleeping conditions, 61% of the respondents said they sleep regularly and 58% said they sleep well, but slightly more respondents said they fall asleep during the day (63%), cannot get rid of fatigue (60%), and have shallow sleep (59%), indicating that their sleeping conditions are not good. <Figure 3>
By age group, those in their 20s and 50s were more likely to say they "fall asleep during the day," while those in their 40s and 50s were more likely to say they "feel tired" and "have trouble falling asleep. The percentages of "sleepy during the day," "not tired," and "shallow sleep" were the highest in the past three years for all age groups. <Figure 4>

Snoring," "cold/numb hands and feet/body," and "tooth grinding" were the top 3 sleep problems, cited by males in their 40s-60s, by females in their 40s-60s, and by females in their 20s-40s, respectively. Sleeping problems either remained unchanged or showed a declining trend over time. <Figure 5>
The percentage of respondents who cannot sleep because of their problems decreased slightly from last year to 68%. Money/income/savings," "School/work," and "Relationships" were the most common worries preventing sleep, and the number of respondents who cited "Money/income/savings" as a reason increased slightly from the previous year. <Figure 6, 7>
