Survey on SDGs (2024) Awareness and Interest

In June 2024, a "Survey on SDGs (2024)" was conducted among 2,500 men and women aged 18-69 throughout Japan. According to the Sustainable Development Report released in 2024 by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), Japan ranks 18th out of 167 countries in terms of its achievement of the SDGs. In the Gender Gap Index published by the World Economic Forum in 2024, Japan ranks a lowly 118th out of 146 countries. In this report, we analyzed the status of SDG penetration, including trends in awareness rates, SDG education, recognition and importance of the 17 goals, and understanding of the SDGs and related words.

- There is a large gap in the perception of "Let's Achieve Gender Equality" and the percentage of respondents who think it is important.
Awareness of the SDGs remained unchanged for the third consecutive year at 84%.

Survey Result Topics
The awareness rate of the SDGs (both the name and the content are known + have heard of the name) was 84%, continuing a flat trend since 2022, with a slight increase from 2023 among men in their 50s and women in their 30s. <Figures 1 and 2>
Only 17% of those who are aware of the SDGs have received education or training at school or in the workplace. 30% of those aged 18-29 have received education, partly because SDG education has started in schools. <Figure 3>

Of the 17 SDGs, the most common responses for "know the contents" were "1. eliminate poverty," "2. eliminate hunger," and "5. achieve gender equality. The most "important" items were "1. End poverty," "2. Zero hunger," "3. Health and welfare for all," "6. Safe water and toilets around the world," "14. The third most important item in terms of content awareness, "5. Achieve gender equality," was selected by only 21% of the respondents. <Figure 4>

For you, the SDGs are "Goals that you want to achieve for the future (their descendants) without fail" and "Goals that you are aware of on a daily basis and that you want to link to your actions" at 20%, with a high percentage of respondents in their 60s. <Figure 5>
The recognition rate of SDG-related words (know both the name and content + have heard the name before) is 70-80% for "food loss," "renewable energy," and "local production for local consumption. Other words have also increased slightly over the past three years. <Figure 6>
