We conducted the "Survey on Pets (2024)" among men and women aged 20-69 nationwide. There has been a pet boom since the spread of the new corona infection, but what is the situation like now that the corona disaster is over? In this survey, we asked about "current pet-owning status," "concerns or problems with other households' pets," and "things other than animals that make people feel like pets".

  • No change in pet ownership before and after Corona, about 40% for dogs and cats.
    Pets of concern are "toilet misbehavior," "meowing," and "odor".

Survey Result Topics

The percentage of respondents who currently own a pet was 28.6%, showing no significant change from three years ago. Dogs were the most common pet kept by 44.4% of respondents, followed by cats at 38.4%.

The percentage of cat ownership tends to be slightly higher among females and among males for fish ownership. Figure 1 and Figure 2

The most common concern or problem with pets kept by other households was "improper use of the toilet while walking" at 13.2%.

The number one concern or problem with pets was "whether the pet will get sick or injured" at 12.4%.

21.7% of respondents have an existence other than animals that they feel like a pet. Stuffed animals" and "Plants/plants" were the top two types of pets at 20%.

Robot vacuum cleaners," "home appliances with voice notifications," "animal-like robots," and "cloud voice services" all received less than 10% of the votes. <Figure 5>

The most frequently mentioned positive aspects of having a pet were that it healed them, that it was cute, and that they felt affection for it.
