Survey on coffee (2024)

We conducted the "Coffee Survey (2024)" among men and women aged 20-69 nationwide. We asked about their usual coffee drinking habits, what kind of coffee they drink at home, and alternative coffees they would like to try.

Survey Result Topics

"I often drink commercial coffee" was the most common way of drinking coffee, at 40%.

The percentage of coffee lovers is lower among younger age groups, with 80% of those in their 60s liking coffee, while only less than 60% of those in their 20s do. <Figure 1>

"Instant coffee" was the top coffee drink at home at 41.7%, followed by "canned coffee," "coffee in drinkable PET bottles," and "commercial drip pack coffee" at around 20%.

In Instant coffee" is particularly popular among the older age groups, with 54.1% of those in their 60s drinking it. <Figure 2>

The top two negative impressions of paper-pack coffee were "inexpensive" and "hassle-free drinking," followed by "inconvenient because it cannot be placed horizontally in the refrigerator after opening," and "difficult to seal or carry around after opening.

More than half (51.8%) of the respondents felt that PET-bottled coffee is "hassle-free". Other top responses were "inexpensive," "convenient to place on the side in the refrigerator after opening," and "sealable and easy to carry".

As for what they would do if coffee prices rose, 43.5% said they would "stay the same and continue drinking coffee," while 26.3% said they would "reduce the amount and frequency of coffee drinking". Fewer respondents (3.9%) would "switch to an alternative coffee".

More than half of those in their 50s and 60s say they will continue to drink coffee as usual. <Figure 5>

32.2% of respondents have an alternative coffee they would like to try. Soy coffee, dandelion coffee, and brown rice coffee were the most popular alternative coffees.
