2023 / 05 / 18

20230518fs

In November 2022, we conducted a survey of 10,002 men and women aged 18-79 across Japan on their lifestyles (2022). This release contains an analysis focusing on the attitude toward living, the age image of the name "senior", and attitudes toward information.
The survey also asked respondents about their level of satisfaction with their lives, their time allowance, the sufficiency of their savings and retirement assets, their health awareness, and their attitudes toward environmental issues. The results can be downloaded from our website.

The report is available for download in the Japanese version of the article.
*The report is only available in the Japanese version.

  • 46% of respondents think their current living conditions are "lower middle" or "lower," and nearly half of those in their 30s and 40s think their current living conditions are "lower middle.
The image of "senior" is 64 years old, while the image of "elderly" and "seniors" is 71 years old.

Survey Result Topics

One's present lifestyle

Respondents were asked to rate their current living arrangements on a nine-point scale from upper-middle to lower-middle, and were grouped into three groups. The majority of respondents in their 30s and 40s selected "lower middle + lower," at 46%, while 29% selected "middle of middle" and 25% selected "upper + middle." Almost half of the respondents in their 30s and 40s selected "lower middle + lower," at 48-49%. Figure 1

Age image of senior name

The age of the senior name was confirmed by actual numbers. The average age of "seniors" was 63.6 years, "elderly" was 71.0 years, and "senior citizens" was 71.4 years. By age group, "seniors" were 63 to 64 years old up to their 60s, and "elderly" were 64.6 years old in their 70s, but there was no significant difference in perception. The age image of "elderly" and "senior citizens" remained at about the same level, with a trend toward higher age image as the respondents' age increased. <Figure 2

The cumulative results in 5-year age increments from age 60 show more pronounced differences in age image by age group. For those in their 30s to 60s, more than half of the respondents in their 18-29 age group said they were "65," while more than half of those in their 30s to 60s said they were "70. Many respondents did not consider anyone younger than their own age to be "elderly" or "seniors. <Figure 3

Attitudes toward information-related awareness

In terms of attitudes and ideas about information (very much agree + somewhat agree), the most common response was "I gather and consider information well in advance when doing something new" at 69%, followed by "I often make decisions based on my own opinions and experiences rather than the opinions and suggestions of others" at 57%, "I am very interested in social trends such as politics and the economy" at 55%, and "I rather go along with the opinions of many people" at 52%. 55% "I often make decisions based on my own opinions and experiences rather than the opinions and suggestions of others," 54% "I am very interested in social trends such as politics and the economy," and 52% "I rather follow the opinions of many people. The largest difference by age group was "I am very interested in social trends such as politics and the economy," with the percentage increasing as the respondents' age increases. This tendency is also seen in "I gather enough information before doing something new" and "I often make decisions based on my own opinions and experiences rather than the opinions and suggestions of others. On the other hand, the percentages of "I often make decisions based on the opinions and suggestions of experts and others," "If the information is useful, I don't care if the sender is unknown," and "I push my own ideas to the end" increase with younger age. <Figure 4
